Fashion Illustration tutorial on how to draw fur fabric

With winter upon us, faux fur is sure to become one of your go-to pieces this chilly season. Fur has been seen all over the runway and the streets for fall/winter 2017. It tends to be a staple trend that keeps popping back up each year in new silhouettes. For 2017, we are seeing a lot of vintage silhouettes with simple details and style lines. Are you loving the fur trend but aren’t sure how to incorporate it into your designs? Bring texture into your garments and take your artwork to the next level. This tutorial will cover a simple technique for sketching realistic fur garments just in time for the winter months.

Materials: mixed media sketch paper, markers, paint & paintbrushes.

Outline the garments on the body. In this sketch, I am doing a long, wool jacket paired with denim, heeled booties, scarf and a tee underneath the jacket.

Next, fill in the pants, booties, scarf, and tee with markers.
Afterwards, fill in all of the skin tone that will come in contact with the jacket. In most tutorials, I recommend doing these finishing touches at the end. However, in this case, the technique I will be demonstrating requires it be done first to get the correct layering affect.

Once everything is filled in, paint the jacket outline.
After the jacket is filled in, we will begin to create the effect of the fur. To do this, dip your brush in paint and blot it off several times on a paper towel. Then, very lightly brush it off the edge of the coat. It will make a light, wispy strokes. Continue this process over the whole coat. Be sure to think about the direction of the strokes and make sure it is pointing in the right direction for a realistic rendering. For example, as you go around the corners change direction.

Next, dip your paintbrush in paint and blot along the edge of the coat. This will take away the harsh, straight edge on the coat. Instead, the edges will look fuzzier and blurrier like the actual fabric.

Afterwards, add any wispy strokes to fill in areas or add shorter strokes to blend it all together.

Due to the furry details of the coat, I did not choose to add any construction details, such as buttons or pockets, because they would blend in on a real fur coat.

Finally, add any facial features and the sketch is finished!
